Former Ghanaian Leader Mahama Visits NEC October 6th, 2017

The immediate past president of Ghana and the head of the ECOWAS observation mission to the 2017 elections today paid a visit to the National Elections Commission (NEC).

Former president John Dramani Mahama led a team of ECOWAS delegation that met with the board of commissioners to ascertain firsthand information on the Tuesday October 10, 2017 elections.

Addressing the commissioners at the James Flomayan Conference Hall at the Headquarters of NEC, the ECOWAS head of delegation said the sub regional body and the entire continent is interested in the Liberian elections giving its historical significance and the fact that its positive outcome will consolidate Africa’s democracy.

The former Ghanaian leader praised the NEC for the good work. He also urged the commission to continue the good relations with the parties and party agents.

He said, ECOWAS was particularly concerned about the deployment of security personnel to polling places across the country and the deployment of election materials on time.

He said ECOWAS looks forward to a peaceful election, which results would reflect the will of the Liberian people.

In response, NEC Chairman Jerome Korkoya assured former president Mahama and his delegation of free, fair and credible election on Tuesday.

He said NEC is on schedule with the deployment of election materials to all 15 counties of Liberia. Chairman Korkoya said the aspect of security is going as planned, disclosing that the Liberia National Police has already completed their deployment in the 15 counties.

Meanwhile, the last batch of ballot papers arrived in the country Wednesday night (October 4th) to complete the representative ballot papers that were printed from Ghana. The presidential ballot papers, printed from Slovenia, arrived on September 23, 2017.

The United Nations mission in Liberia, UNMIL, is helping to airlift sensitive materials including ballots to hard-to-reach counties of Liberia. The exercise is expected to fold on the weekend, more than a day to the polling day.

The 2017 presidential and representative elections will be held on Tuesday October 10, 2017 across the country. The polls open at 8am to 6pm.
