 NEC shows appreciations and bids farewell to departing UNMIL SRSG March 27th, 2018

The Chairman and Members of the Board of Commissioners of the National Elections Commissioners (NEC) today hosted a farewell Luncheon in honor of outgoing SRSG of UNMIL and Deputies to Liberia.

In a Citation presented to the Special Representative of the Secretary General Mr. Farid Zarif, the NEC Chairman Jerome Korkoya thanked the leadership of the UNMIL for its countless support, both technical and financial. He further praised the outgoing SRSG and Deputies for their exemplary style of leadership.

Chairman Korkoya told the honorees that the NEC would always be grateful for the UN assistance during elections since 2005. Consequently, the NEC can boast of a strong confidence and trust from the Liberian people in its electoral processes.

Also in attendance and making remarks were the ECOWAS Special Representative to Liberia and head of the National Civil Society Council who thanked the SRSG and Deputies for their Leadership and services towards preserving the Peace in Liberia.

Speaking on behave of the honorees, Mr. Farid Zarif thanked the Board of Commissioners for the well appreciated program and reminded the audience that a cordial working relationship with the NEC was made possible by the hard working personnel at the NEC including each member of the Board of Commissioners.

Mr. Zarif said he would have love to turn the gesture other way around and thanked the NEC and the people of Liberia for what he termed as “the 2017 General and Runoff Elections were the most successful and peaceful election ever”. He further praised Chairman Korkoya and his team for what he termed as “had built an election machinery that ensures a high quality democratic elections process.

Mr. Farid Zarif and his two principle deputies: Mr. Waldemar Very, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General for Political Affairs and Rule of Law and Mr. Yacoub El Hillo, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General for Peace and Consolidation have all ended their tenure in Liberia. The UN mission in Liberia concludes its peacekeeping mission by the end of March 2018.
