NEC Launches Count Down to 2017 Elections, Refurbished Website and Social Media Platforms May 30th, 2016

The National Elections Commission (NEC) has launched the Countdown to the 2017 Presidential and Representative Elections.

During the ceremony held Sunday in Monrovia, the NEC also launch its refurbished website, new logo, and social media platforms, specifically Facebook and Twitter pages to facilitate citizens’ access to information about the electoral process and upcoming elections.

The event was part of NEC’s efforts aimed at bolstering public interest around the 2017 Elections and enhancing citizens’ trust in the Commission’s capacity to conduct free, fair and transparent Elections in 2017.

The interactive website and the social media pages will be used by the Commission to disseminate Civic Voter Education messages and also address queries from the public on all aspects of the electoral process.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Co-Chairperson of the Commission, Cllr. Sarah J. Toe, urged the assistance of the media in effectively disseminating information about all aspects of the electoral process to the public as the NEC strives to ensure the conduct of free, fair, transparent and credible elections in 2017.

Cllr. Toe said the new logo is part of a process in which the NEC is seeking to develop a more consistent corporate image to highlight its role as an independent Electoral Management Body (EMB).

The new logo of the NEC is a transparent ballot box with a red lid complemented with the letters ‘NEC’ written in bold blue capital letters. The ballot box was the logo selected by a large percentage of stakeholders asked to select from a sample of logos during a consultation exercise organized by the NEC.

The transparent ballot box represents transparency and an electoral process in which all voters can freely elect their leaders in a free, fair, credible and transparent manner. These terms are consistently being stressed by stakeholders as those associated with credible elections and electoral management bodies. The colors reflect the national colors and the blue, red and white mean Liberian nationhood and civic virtue.

Cllr. Toe said the website of the National Elections Commission was constructed since 2010 and taking into consideration the advancement in technology, the need arose to have it reconstructed to enable it conform to current day reality.

She further disclosed that the social media platforms of the Commission will present a whole new paradigm for effectively disseminating Civic/Voter Education messages to the public as the 2017 Elections draw closer.

“In an era of greater transparency and authenticity, social media is rapidly delivering a new standard of interaction among people and so today, the Commission is also launching its social media platforms, specifically Facebook and Twitter platforms,” Cllr. Toe noted.

The development of the new logo was funded by the European Union through UNDP while the reconstructed website and the social media platforms were funded by the USAID through IFES.
