NEC-CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS SIGN CODE OF CONDUCT FOR 2017 ELECTIONS July 19th, 2016

The National Elections Commission (NEC) and Civil Society Organizations in the country have signed the Revised Code of Conduct for Civil society organizations desirous of conducting civic voter education for the 2017 General Elections.

The Code of Conduct sets standards and core values which all CSOs must adhere to in order to operate lawfully within the Republic of Liberia and is recommended for wider usage as a standard of self-regulation and sets a benchmark that can be used for self-scrutiny and evaluation.

The signing of the Revised Code of Conduct for CSOs took place Friday at the close of a two-day workshop for the validation and signing of the Revised Code of Conduct, Regulations and Guidelines for local and national CSOs involved with electoral activities in the country.

The Revised Code of Conduct was crafted in 2013 by the NEC and Civil Society Organizations and provides the standards for civil society organizations collaborating with the Commission in determining how they should conduct civic/voter education activities.

The Code of Conduct was signed by Representatives pro-democracy organizations, persons with disabilities, faith based organizations, women and youth organizations.

More than 100 participants, including representatives of Community and Faith Based Organizations as well as Civil Society Organizations and assistant elections magistrates from the 15 counties are attending the workshop.

Meanwhile, the Commission will on July 20, 2016 commence the accreditation of Civil Society organizations that are desirous of delivering Civic/Voter Education services to all stakeholders in the country.

The accreditation will take place at the headquarters of the Commission in Monrovia and the 19 elections magisterial offices across the country.
