AU Delegation Meets NEC Authorities for Update September 12th, 2017

The latest of international groups visiting the Elections Commission on matters relating the pending elections has been a three-man leadership delegation from the African Union (AU) Observation Mission to Liberia.

The meeting included the Mission’s Long-term Observer Coordinator Francis Kissinger Kakai, the Election Gender Analyst Ellen Dingani and Dr. Maximillina Kolbe Domapielle Political and Media Analyst.

The African Union has since Sunday, September 10, 2017 deployed a total of 13 Long-Term Observers in parts of Liberia for the October 10th Presidential and Representative Elections.

The members of the AU delegation were more concerned about the issues of the final Voter Registration Roll and its distribution, logistical challenges, support to the Commission outside of government own financial support.

The NEC Chairman, Cllr. Jerome Korkoya, updating the AU delegation spoke highly of the logistical and the untimely financial constraints faced by the government as well as the deplorable road conditions in mainly South-eastern Liberia and other parts of the country, including Gbarpolu, Lofa and parts of Nimba counties facing the Commission in its quest to conduct free, fair and transparent elections come October 10, 2017.

The NEC Boss said the role of local and international Observers are critical to the credibility of the 2017 elections and promised that the doors of the Commission will remain open to assist the AU delegation during all of the electoral processes.

On the question of the distribution of the final voter roll, Cllr. Korkoya, flanked by the chairman of 2017 Election Steering Committee, Commissioner Samuel Joe and the newly commissioned Executive Director C.A. Lami Lighe, said under the law, the Commission is required to make the final Voter Roll available to Registered Political Parties.

But the NEC Boss hinted AU delegation that if possible, the Commission will also make the final Voter Roll available to the Election Coordinating Committee, ECC.
