The 19 Election Magistrates of the National Elections Commission (NEC) have completed a three-day Voter Roll Update (VRU) Training of Trainers workshop at the Headquarters of the Commission.
The 19 Election Magistrates of the 15 Counties of Liberia were recently issued the Writs of Elections, mandating them to conduct the 2020 Special Senatorial Election (SSE) and the constitutional Referendum on December 8, 2020.
NEC Chairperson, Hon. Davidetta Browne Lansanah, mandated the issuance of the Writs, and was immediately issued by the Clerk of Writs Antoinette Johnson on August 4, 2020.
At the opening session of the TOT on the VRU procedures, the Commissioner with oversight responsibility on Training, Cllr. Ernestine Morgan Awar, urged the Magistrates to be steadfast and honest in the discharge of their duties. Cllr Morgan Awar said the timing of such working session could not have come at the right time ahead of the start of the VRU.
Another Commissioner, Barsee Kpangbai, himself a former magistrate for closed to two decades, participated in the TOT. Commissioner Kpangbai admonished his former comrades to work hard like ever before considering the many challenges facing the Commission for the conduct of the 2020 SSE and Referendum.
The 19 Assistants Magistrates, Coordinators, and Electoral Supervisors were also part of the TOT facilitated by the Training Section of the NEC.
NEC will in September begin mobile VRU with the core aim of capturing eligible voters, including those who have turned 18 years and above, eligible voters that have relocated from one electoral district to another, and those who did not register at all during the voter registration in 2017. The process will also accommodate those who have misplaced their voting cards.
The intensive TOT ran from Monday August 10-13, 2020.
In another development, the NEC on Monday August 10, 2020, accredited 325 Community Based Organizations CBOs, Faith Based Organizations (FBOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) from the fifteen sub-political divisions of Liberia.
These organizations usually assist the Commission to carry out approved outreach activities that inform, educate and motivate the citizenry, especially those turning 18 years or above to actively participate in the impending electoral activities of 2020 SSE and Referendum.
